Hire a party bus. Ever since I attended my first annual Greek Youth Party Bus a decade ago, party buses have had an effect on me similar to the effect of a shoe sale on a diva. There are a couple of companies that do it town so you can check various options out. From marketing our university residence during open day to making a trek with mates more enjoyable, a party bus is a great excuse to have a party.

Have a steak. Steaks are incredible on their own so imagine if a great chef preps one for you. Bloem rocks some great establishments which make amazing steaks.

Growing up, we had the Beef Baron but since it is no longer, there are a couple of other places to test even the most devout vegans. From the Longhorn to the Shute seriously, they know how to make a steak at the Shute to Margaritas, Free State meat finds great places to be cooked. Doing this, I discovered new parks, geocaches and burger joints…also potential property investments. Hunt Art. The Bloemfontein art scene is huge yet underground. Following the movement of the Fractal community will let you know when there are new exhibitions but Oliewenhuis is not where all the art happens.

But one need not look too far for art as the community expands. Moreover, antique shops and the art shop in the Checkers Hyper center in the south have made the art arena larger, wider, more vibrant and much more accessible. In Germany, many large cities are developed to the point where home owners cannot afford to have gardens because of the price of land. This is remedied by the existence of many parks. While we tend to have gardens, we also have many parks which are underutilized.

Some parks have interesting goodies attached to them such as the Orchid House. Check things out when you are at a park. Suit Up.

Bloemfontein boasts a couple of hideouts for cool suit items. From wooden ties to wooden bowties, wood seems to be the ultimate in suit accessory fashion.

There are also occasional occasions to don a suit from watching the symphony orchestra to hitting a play in the Sand. Hang out in Court. Anybody can go sit in on a hearing from a divorce to a property dispute. One of my first dates with my girlfriend was taking her to a divorce hearing and predicting each argument with great success so that she knows who will come off worse if she ever leaves me…but I digress. If you want to hear excellent argument, make a plan to sit in on an interesting matter in the Supreme Court of Appeal it is the only one in the country.

Volunteer at the Cheetah Experience. There are a number of charities you can get involved in more on that later but Cheetah Experience is up there in my favourites tab. The place is rather spectacular and well run to the point that the volunteers offer their time, in some instances, from 5am to 9pm. The caracals are more adorable than your granny trying to quote Eminem lyrics in an attempt relate to your generation.

Shop local. The Bloem manufacturing industry is minute but it still exists and you would do well to investigate it. Of particular interest to me is pallet furniture so Palletfurn is a great industry player that even exports out of the city. If they get more exposure, it would do wonders for the growth of the manufacturing sector, especially promoting startups. Hip Hop. Great musicians are born in Bloemfontein and often they leave but the hip hop industry is alive and well with parties being thrown regularly.

Get on air. Radio in South Africa is struggling for content and with listenership dropping across the board, presenters will feature anybody with something to offer. Have an Instawalk. The ones I did in Johannesburg were incredibly fun. Get yo hair did. There are tons of places in Bloem that do hair and beauty so you can take your pick. Today, the ballie at Free State Barbers in Northridge styles me out and also stocks my oil of choice.

Spa Out. Night Trails. Another thing I discovered in Jozi, night trails is when you leave your exposure on the camera open for a couple of seconds at sunset so you get the New York-esk kinda picture. Old Presidency.

The Old Presidency museum is also one of those goodies left off of the list. It also boasts a cool art gallery and sometimes a theater. I usually just followed on my bicycle and worked the camera. That being said, there are some unofficial spots where one can skate too. Pine cones! His dad took us out on a bakkie to Happy Valley where we collected pine cones.

These things make for a great fire though you need many. Visit the elderly. The best advice ever offered to me came from my client and entrepreneur Steve. Steve told me to go to an old age home and speak to a retired person who worked a job their entire life and see the regret in their eyes about how they lived their lives.

Our generation venerates the youth at the expense of the elderly much too easily and you could do yourself a great service by taking the time to hang out with them. Catalog street art. If somebody were to catalog it, it might inspire more and we might create another tourist attraction but right now, great art is going to waste.

Check out the cob houses. There are some people who make incredible houses out of cob with great art. This sustainable form of house building has incredible properties. Some good people teach and train others to make these houses and empower the unemployed to establish their own house making businesses.

Go to church. The churches here are pretty majestic and incredible to look at. Of course one could seek out the cathedrals but there are a couple of little gems around town. My favourite is what seemingly is an abandoned chapel just past Route Juice yourself.

Since then I have witnessed similar events on a daily basis. My prediction is that motorists will soon start driving on the wrong side of the road. I mean, why wait in a queue when you can drive around and push in front?

The pain and suffering caused by an accident is beyond comprehension especially when loved ones are crippled or killed. Contrary to what they may think, drivers who deliberately disregard the rules of the road are not clever or cool. In reality they are, in fact, just spectacularly stupid. The NPOs will have 30 days in which to pay with no interest, with additional benefits being no administration, annual or renewal fees.

The spaza shop, run by elderly residents from Khayelitsha, is one of the social enterprises used by NOAH to assist people dependent on state pensions in the greater Cape Town area. A further benefit of the Act for Change card is greater peace of mind for donors who, by paying donations directly onto the card, will ensure their money is spent only on items that can be bought from Shoprite and subsidiaries.

The application process for the card is only open to registered NPOs. Hilton Davids from the Vlottenburg Community Organisation VCO in Wesbank, which supports, feeds and provides an aftercare programme for six to year-olds, says he would most definitely recommend the card to other organisations. The road running and walking event, which includes a 5km fun run, a 10km race and a A substantial amount of prize money will be up for grabs, with the male and female winners of the All early entrants will receive a goodie bag when collecting their race number at one of the Sportsmans Warehouse collection points or at Huguenot High School in Wellington.

She leaves early before the boat has left the pier. Head down. Bitter and angry, it seems, at the world. At her wayward, miscreant son. Her only son and heir. I have small snatches of memory of the 2 weeks-long boat journey. Spent mostly in the bar on the sun deck or playing outdoor games with some new friends.

Meet some interesting young and old people and some other young hooligans from Australia. We discuss T. We sleep together a few times, more out of boredom, inquisitiveness and sexual need than any real feelings. What else to do on the boat but eat, drink, have sex and play games? Nothing else to see, so they re-run it on special request. Help organise a recital for Amin, a well-known flamenco guitarist in Cape Town, who is going for further musical training in London and a young opera singer from the well-known Eyon Group, who is also on her way for further opera training in London.

A brilliant show it turns out to be. We arrive in Britain early in September , and dock at Southampton. Immigration authorities question me closely. But I have a valid return ticket, plus I have proof that I am en route to Sweden. I get a 48 hours permit in-transit to Sweden, as I have proof of intension to stay in Britain.

Those without valid papers or accreditation are barred entry. Amin is one of them. Back to the boat for the return passage. I learn that the White Man has put up barriers to entry into their Paradise. Whatever excuse they give at Immigration in Southampton, its is quite arbitrary really.

But I can talk, make myself understood as I have a good diction and command of their language. Look them in the eye and lie if necessary. We hardly sleep at all frankly, only snatches and are one the go constantly. New kids on the block getting to know the Big City of London. Now this looks cool. He is sharing a flat with a sexy red-headed French babe, S… who once sang back-up with the Rolling Stones. But the night clubs are expensive so Zane smuggles us in. He knows the ropes by now and has the right connections.

The London dolly-birds chirp, chirp are something else. Expensively clad. Out of our league. We drool with our tongues hanging out. I also find that the exchange rate is swallowing much of my meagre stock of hard cash. Conversion of currency rates always amazes me. I come out feeling cheated or robbed every time I exchange currencies. Two rands exchanges for one British pound. I am almost broke already. Come across a young longhaired dude selling the hippie magazine International Times on Trafalgar Square which gives information on music events, Happenings, Stonehenge Trips, communes to visit, Amsterdam News and the best dope prices.

Visit coffee shops and bars in the central London area and listen to free music from buskers and performers in Hype Park and in the subways. Touristy stuff and orientation, you know. London is huge with many suburbs and districts flung about. Its Summer in the City Hot, fumes, walking, sightseeing makes one thirsty But the English beer is thin and watery.

Fail to make contact with a maternal aunt Zane Zainunnissa in London, but who cares? Free at last! Thank the Lord! Thankfully, he helps with my heavy laden coffin. We take the overnight boat-train from Liverpool Street, London via the English Channel, on an awesome train journey via the Hook of Holland, with a difficult platform change in the middle of the night in Bremen, then wizz past Hamburg, with heavy duty cranes and shipping and through to Copenhagen.

In retrospect, I would never have managed the journey alone! The date is the 15th September, and I have arrived in Scandinavia! It is mid-morning, so we decide to take a taxi outside the station to Lund from there, thinking its nearby although we have valid train tickets to the university town of Lund.

Everything seems expensive to us now. Nobody informs us. We are novices at this game. Autumn fields of corn, now being harvested, along a most modern highway. But an extremely friendly, smiling from ear-to-ear long blond trestled young damsel, whom we find out is named Christina, who is studying English and is his nearby neighbour, invites us in to wait for mah cuz H.

Its love at first sight … but then discover later that she is making out with the cuz … lucky bastard! The latter arrives later and we crash at his flat … Who was cuz Hilmi? I suppose we were quite close then as I had spent a year living in Roodepoort just East of Johannesburg and went to school there for a year after Mother and us had? So from then it was only natural that we would have a lot in common.

July and through a growth hormone meant that he started shaving at c. I must have been 17 or 18 at the time. This was tradition, so I was expecting cuz H. Dressed in a stylish, possibly dark blue, jacket and grey trousers, he looked more like a travelling salesman coming to flog Christmas hampers.

And there were always pretty girls galore around, some I remember were Angie, Joan and other cousins of Julian Ruiters or others who were friends through Alec McCloud and company. The small-time Cape Town thugs immediately saw a Vaalie in the wrong spot at the wrong time and struck. We all immediately rushed to battle-stations and cars were sent out to scout the area for the miscreants but they had vanished into thin air by then.

One lesson learnt. But once or twice I had to run for my life, quickly sobering up and leaping over fences and brick walls to evade my possible pursuers. You never know with these guys. It was not for nothing that I was a one-time short distance runner and high-jump maestro and with the adrenaline pumping in your veins I could put on a turn of speed to challenge any Olympics champ. He was extremely status conscious but I took this to be a reflection of the social conditioning of his class and locality.

I was not to see cuz H. If anything, mah cuz H. MHD would inevitably pour scorn on my intellectual preoccupation and political organising. He never participated in any of the study-circle activities I initiated nor did he even take part in any of the ANC Youth and Students activities we, South African students in Lund, almost all participated in but always had lots to say and would throw much shit at me.

Ingrained paternalism is one thing, but something else made Sammy run. Individual striving and personal accumulation have always been his trajectory. He had time for me and I for him at the beginning of my stay in Lund, Sweden from to , despite our obvious differences in character makeup, lifestyle orientation and personal politics.

But it was a confliction relationship I must admit. His two elder sisters, Zureena and Bahia were always bickering like cat and dog and his socially competitive and domineering streak might stem from a combination of male Indian machismo strong on the Witwtaresrand and family conditioning from his class background and his own inflated ego.

This experience changes him a little, culturally and intellectually, maybe broadening his narrower horizons, that of Indian community life on the Witwatersrand in the sixties and the military college he was sent to complete High-school after some mishap at home. Maybe the Latino machismo could blend with the former identity and reinforce this stereotypical male arrogance and stereotype.

How much do I feel a Swede? Nor did I really care as this was all a big Power Trip, as far as I was concerned.

Also, because of his fiercely competitive attitude and possessive streak, do I think he has ever forgiven me for once seducing an ex- neighbour and his one-time lover, Christina.

HMD fell slap bang into this social shitheap minus toilet paper or protective prophylactic and has swum to the top of his status-orientated world by stint, endeavour and the shedding of any outwards morality, except the individualist ethos of the Gujerati commercial elite he arose out of. Man maketh himself but in the social conditions of his immediate environment, it is said. But then, if you grow up on James Bond movies and hardly progress further than the next few titles of the Ian Flemming ouvre or some other pulp fiction to addle his brain for intellectual stimulus, it becomes obvious that you are purposefully hiding your true feelings and will remain stunted for the rest of your life.

Shame, for he could be quite pleasant company, except that he cannot take criticism nor reflect on his own praxis. It was a change as sudden and chemically mysterious as sunlight turning rancid after an electric storm.

At the next, they had taken to the streets and were creating barricades and wrenching up paving stones with jack-hammer drills. Instead of beads, kaftans and sandals, suddenly there were Mao or Lenin badges, political slogans and military fatigues.

Berets, leather jackets and boots. Revolutionary Libertarian Anarco-Syndicalism fought the counter-revolutionaries in Spain in the Young workers, infected by the virus, occupied their factories in solidarity with the students and for a better world.

Small, tightly-knit, revolutionary groupuscules emerged in the confusion, which could influence thousands by their message and their presence in these struggles. Discussions in every possible nook and cranny, fierce debate and alternative media became the order of the day. Not only by the Left broadly defined but also by many of the traditional Right. It is thus not by accident that many F.

Yaffe and P. Sweezy and P. The massive expansion of capital accumulation and productivity application of new forms of machinery to production was also the result of the almost unprecedented post-war boom [from c. And free universal schooling — for 13 years often! It started in Mexico City in early ,4 with students protesting at the costs of the building of football stadiums for the coming Olympic Games, in the face of homelessness and poverty in the country.

The cost is huge! Will history repeat itself as farce, if not as tragedy? Low-cost housing, cheaper and safer transport means and sanitation facilities for the masses are on the back-burner in the neo-liberal South Africa of today under a majoritarian ANC- government!

Many lost their lives in the tumult as the army opened fire. The show must go on In May , it erupted in the streets of Paris, then other major French cities and led to a General Strike. May became a watershed for this tumultuous decade. An evasive plural: they want to be objective and avoid venturing beyond the surface random facts. The student explosion? The barricades of the Rue Gay-Lussac in Paris? The Grenelle Accords between employers and workers? The June elections? All of them together of course.

More than 4 million strikers held out for 3 weeks, more than 2 million for a month. Finally, who were the strikers?

We remember most readily the novel aspects of the strike: white-collar workers occupying their offices, footballers their headquarters, actors their theatres. As in , the extension of the wage-earning population was reflected in the contours of the strike But a closer look shows that the backbone of the strike was still in the traditional bastions of the industrial proletariat, in engineering, chemicals, transport Overall, the movement varied depending on the size of the plants: plants of more than workers lost five times more production than those of less than The mass of young workers under 25 had their first experience of struggle, as did women whose entry into the labour market was accelerating.

Semi-skilled workers were often at the forefront of the action. This was the hard core. But then so did Fidel Castro. But that is only one side of the story and I am to hear other bitter and enraged oppositional voices later in Sweden. To many outside observers, mostly in the established media, this was depicted as an elusive revolution, whose motives no one fully understood, least of all some of its youthful participants, whose leaders enjoyed only their briefest heyday, whose armies had no sooner mustered, than they dispersed to fresh amusements and pleasures.

See also their: Mai Si! Youthful energy being unleashed, new technologies of communication and global socio- cultural changes, liked to changed tastes and global niche markets and anti-war sentiments, were to emerge as the defining edge for millions of young people worldwide. What staid old institutionalised politics failed to unite, popular music and the pop industry created, around it seemed to do.

But it held a stringent plea and a warning. So, for me, the sixties in South Africa represented a time of growth and a time of incremental changes. Not major political or sociological change, as it had in Europe and America but it symbolised cultural and emotional changes - of the slow, uneven maturation and unsteady fledgling growth of a new generation.

Seize the time! Seize the book! Take the contradictory notion of Black Power. Sivanandan a leading radical in England, my obs. Younger blacks no longer show themselves as supplicants in a foreign land.

They demanded the right to live and work in Britain on their own terms, while at the same time identifying themselves as part of a world community of the oppressed.

It was black Americans who dramatized the contradiction between the promise and the reality of America and of the post-war era America dominated It is often forgotten that the American sixties were merely a single facet of a global phenomenon.

Ali was one of those who acted as a transmitter between struggles in America and struggles outside. Through his media appearances in every corner of the planet, Ali played a major role in stimulating the worldwide circulation of ideas and images that lie at the heart of the sixties. Just as the anti-colonial movement inspired the American black freedom struggle, so that struggle inspired others in Africa, Asia and Europe.

Television carried scenes not just of carnage from Vietnam, but also of street demonstrations and battles with authority in Paris, Northern Ireland, Prague, Mexico and Japan. Through this global chain reaction the Black American freedom movement fed and was in turn nourished by events elsewhere It was a time of rebellion as well as one of reaction. Those who were not part of the solution were regarded as part of the problem.

In the end, it was plagued by the same lack of accountability for which it criticised the old civil rights leaders. The very interaction between politics and popular culture that ensured widespread dissemination of the images and rhetoric of Black Power broke the organisational link between leaders and led, substituting for it the mediation of television. In the absence of durable organisation and a clearly defined program, rhetoric ruled, along with sectarianism and macho posturing The internationalism of Black Power was much more than an abstract political ethic.

It flowered from a revised and broadened definition of the individual and the community to which he or she belonged Black Power was a key vector of the global sixties; it drew inspiration as well as sound and images from a wide array of anti-colonial and anti-racist struggles, and its impact was felt in the Caribbean, Africa, Asia and Western Europe.

It was discovered that gestures of defiance could be commodified and marketed, and the profits recycled to bolster precisely those forces which were allegedly being defied Popular culture became simultaneously a vehicle of protest and a Vehicle for incorporation. The themes of Black Power were echoed in soul and funk music. White performers had turned their backs on the Vietnam conflict and the music of social protest, but black singers, composers and arrangers spoke more passionately and directly than ever before Graphic references to black poverty and oppression, invocations of racial awareness, the call for community responsibility, all regarded as the commercial kiss of death in the early sixties, now became staples of commercial black cultural production.

This was also the era of the rise of reggae, a unique effusion of the Black Atlantic. Their generation felt the impact of Black Power across the West Indies, where it answered the need for a post-colonial analysis of racial oppression. Marley, Tosh and Bunny Wailer chronicled the experiences and voiced the yearnings of the Jamaican poor, but placed them in a world context.

Like the National of Islam, they expressed the desire for collective and individual redemption through Biblical language of exile and return. Like Ali, in speaking of and for a diaspora, they invoked a vision of universal social justice underpinned by human love. From the margins of the world economy, out of a particular vernacular, they created avanguarde modern sound which proved hugely influential on both sides of the Atlantic and in northern and southern hemispheres.

It was a generation that had not been cowered and beaten into submission by The Land Acts of and , s and s urban segregation wave, the Depression, the fascist Brownshirts and informal and formalized hierarchical racism in the workplace and residential areas with new Acts of Government.

Most of us were born after , when the Boer Nationalist Party came to power. Not for us the scarcities and uncertainties of the political order. Write a nasty insensitive card to her. The move to Vildanden is in many ways very positive, as the people in the corridor are friendly: I meet Fayez Shami, a young Palestinian guy who was born in Jordan, and who studies bio- chemistry and compled a degree in environmental studies later.

We soon become best friends and I spent many hours discussing the Middle-Eastern situation with him, as he was an al Fatah supporter but is always very sweet and kind. We often listened to the bewitching wails of Egyptian-born diva Uum Khalsum, that could go on for hours.

Bewitching stuff. It is said that when her voice came over Cairo Radio, offices were emptied, taxis and cars remained stationary and the whole Arab World listened and wept in silence! He has a car and he often gives me lifts to town and we take drives into the countryside in spring-time. I meet with his friends out in town and drink more beer.

We become secret part-time lovers and good friends, even though she has a steady boyfriend who is a travelling salesman. I remember our flirtations and coy discussions in the communal kitchen. Me struggling with a few words of Swedish and she with a few in English.
