At School he was a sportsman, playing rugby, tennis and swimming and was respected enough to be named class captain. The young and passionate breakdancer turned disk jockey recalls a moment back in when he witnessed his mentor, DJ Fresh, play at a local club during the Grahamstown Arts Festival. Early in his adult life, becoming a DJ was never what he anticipated doing for a living as he went on to study marketing at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology.
At first his days on campus were no different from those in high school as he still kept to himself. Then a friend from high school referred him to a mutual contact who needed a DJ for his party. The name of "PH" came from Primary School, which was what his friends used to call him in class, something he says stuck. Uncertain on how to handle the newly acquired fame, the young DJ chose to focus on his studies together with his craft in the hope that the two would later bear fruit.
As luck would have it, that dream became a reality. Having completed his tertiary qualification in marketing, Madubela started working at an agency called Anything Goes in Cape Town while moonlighting as the resident DJ in clubs and lounges around the city. Becoming the party master for brand parties like Jamieson Soul Session, Madubela started flirting with the idea of moving to Joburg. I heard this track for the first time when I went to Ibiza. It was in Es Paradis, although I can't remember who played it.
I just remember it being a really euphoric moment. I played this track recently and was really surprised all the younger ravers knew what it was, seeing as most of them would have been about five years old when this was released.
This is a track that I don't think will ever be far from our current to playlist. I first heard this one in Space — rest in peace — and it just blew my mind. The echoed strings and soaring spoken vocals give this track a meditative feel. I was at a party where Pete Heller was a guest and he played this song when the first lights of sun came out. I was off my head and it was unbelievable in how many places this song took me.
It was around when I heard this and has been a favorite since then — it still brings me memories of that night. This was a sunset anthem in amongst the staff at Mambo.
Its deep, emotional and hooks you right in. Anyone remember the days of funky house? Upbeat tunes, bleached blonde mullets and ripped jeans. Musically, this catchy Tim Deluxe track epitomised the sonic prerequisites of the era and became the backing track to the Balearic summer of An essential tune for any sunset collector.
Released when trip-hop and chilled breaks were a big deal commercially and with more discerning audiences in Ibiza. Paul Oakenfold threw the kitchen sink at his Bunkka album and it shows in the polished production. This soaring breaks anthem was a big radio hit in the UK and helped to define the sound of the summer in Ibiza. Every time I hear this it reminds me of those crazy afterhours back in the day, after Cocoon, when Sven played at beach locations like Estanyol.
This track always gives me a lot of goosebumps each time I hear it. For me, it perfectly combines soulful deepness with Balearic drumming. Monika Kruse. Upbeat electro meets tech-house with those catchy bleeps that you either loved or loathed. It became our soundtrack to the summer and this track became our song. A fantastic musical journey which guides the original vocal through various forms of musical expression. A huge string laden intro makes this a very atmospheric ambient track, until the disco sounding bassdrum comes in and added synth elements take the listener on a ride towards the roots of US house music.
This was the opening track for my first BBC Essential mix. Cocoon Closing, Amnesia, A real daylight morning session. Half of East London seemed to be on the Terrace that morning when someone dropped this absolutely amazing track.
A very big moment for me getting to know the island and enjoying Amnesia! Rich NxT. Guy Gerber. I heard this track around while chilling out with some friends in a bar after a crazy night of lots of partying. It was a local DJ playing it and I felt straight away that it must have been a Thievery Corporation production.
It was around that era where chillout music became pretty popular and a lot of people around the world where playing it. Only places like McDonald's and Burger King were open, so the group members gained weight from this.
Since so much was happening, the group members did not even notice this on the tour and did not consider themselves overweight. Charlie Stettler introduced the group to producer Kurtis Blow , who helped them find their signature sound.
The group's self-titled debut album, Fat Boys , is considered by many to be the first hip-hop album to feature such the element known as beatbox.
He and another rapper, Doug E. Fresh , popularized beatboxing, inspiring other artists to innovate, including Biz Markie. One day in , Russell Simmons stormed into Stettler's office and told him that he was going to have a festival titled Fresh Fest Tour '84, in which his groups and break dancers would take part.
The young promoter could not get the beverage company to return, so he called a friend of his and asked him if there was anything the Swiss were trying to sell. The Swatch wristwatch turned out to be such a product. Russell Simmons did not want to take The Fat Boys on the tour, because nobody had heard of them at that point.
Stettler went to an old Tower Records store on Broadway and handed out 5, flyers that read: "Guess the weight of The Fat Boys and the person who does wins cans of diet Pepsi and one dollar". Thousands of children lined up at the Tower Records store to take part.
In the end, a boy from Harlem won. Channel 2 News filmed this event, including the delivery of the Pepsi. The next day, Stettler saw in the newspaper that The Jackson 5 was going to be reuniting at a concert in October He called his wife and part-time partner, asking her to write a press release saying that The Jackson 5 have picked the then still unknown group The Fat Boys as their opening act.
As a result, Stettler himself distributed this press release across the city. They simply said: "Brrr, Stick' Em! Ha-ha-ha, Stick 'Em! At the time, the American office of the company Swatch was tasked with trying to advertise their product to American audiences.
