Doerner's contribution to the title track is one of the best examples of the former. Her cracked, bluesy purr fits well with The Books' solid American roots core, and the melody is spare and understated, wisely remaining one of many elements rather than becoming the prime focus of the song. There's so much breathing room here, and her voice fills it perfectly. Books co-founder Nick Zammuto sings on several of the other tracks that play with song structure.

Both are solid, but somehow the presence of this voice makes The Books sound just a little less special. Contrast these more song-oriented bits with the sampled voice I think it's Doerner's again run through the shredder on "There Is No There". S Is for Evrysing. Explanation Mark. There Is No There. Take Time. Don't Even Sing About It. A True Story of True Love. A rootless sound that defies the urge to trace its origins, The Books' woozy collage style lends electronic manipulation the air of an organic rustle. Banjos and fiddles have been put through the laptop wringer before, but few records make a humble, striking show of it like The Lemon Of Pink.

  4. Aug 16,  · The Books continue their collapsing of musical genres with THE LEMON OF PINK, which creates an entirely new form: glitch-folk. The banjo that permeates the first part of the title track sounds so wrong, it’s right, especially set against a cut-up musical collage that features a plaintive—and seemingly improvised—vocal and soothing strings that start to screech in the second part/5().
