Well-worth it, is what I say! I could make better compilation from my old cassettes. It doesn't sound like Enigma at all - some garage-made mixture of not-really-great songs. It stars an innovative actor, Timothy Dalton who took the role seriously; however, I purchased this particular soundtrack because the late John Barry scored it.
The only reason I say this is that Timothy was in all three. Barry won Oscars for so many others! One of the best Bond movie Scores..
John Barry's last outing on a Bond film.. Listening makes me remember the great scenes. John Barry was the consummate Bond score composer: he brought the sound of excitement and energy to this spy-fi series, which might have failed without a soundtrack that could match its visual fireworks.
This album is an excellent example of Barry's output. Give a listen to the excellent track "Where Has Everybody Gone? Chrissie Hynde sings the love theme with yearning and regret, without ever losing the underlying edge, which is much harder to achieve than it sounds; in comparison to their respective Bond attempts, Hynde puts Sheryl Crow and Madonna to shame.
Seriously: Hynde and The Pretenders demonstrate here that they know what Bond music requires, even for the wistful love theme, whereas you have to wonder if A-Ha were really paying attention to the fact that they were recording for a Bond film and not some generic semi-action flick.
If not for that lone misjudgment when it came to using A-Ha, I'd have given this five stars. Even if you don't care for Barry and I do , I'd buy this for the two Pretenders tracks alone. One person found this helpful. See all reviews.
